What the third column reports is what each bank chose to publish rather than how hard each one is: a bank that publishes nothing may still open an account, and a bank that publishes a full list still reserves the right to ask for more. “Not published” is a finding about the page rather than a judgement about the institution. Thailand publishes no approval or refusal figures, and we found none we could source, so none appear here.

The four families of document Kasikornbank names, and the one people do not expect

Kasikornbank is the only one of the four that publishes enough to prepare against. It asks for four different kinds of proof, and each one answers a different question about you.

Your passport answers who you are. Your non-immigrant visa, and the bank writes that all types qualify, answers what your status in the country is. A document matching the purpose of your stay, which can be a work permit or a university or school certificate, answers why you are here, and the alternative matters: the certificate sits beside the work permit rather than behind it, so a student is not being asked for something they cannot have.

The fourth is the one that surprises people. Kasikornbank asks for a government-issued identification document from your country of nationality: a national ID card, a driving licence, or a household registration. That is not your passport and not a Thai document. It is your home country proving you exist, in a form your passport does not carry, which is why it is the item most likely to be sitting in a drawer four thousand miles away.

One account holder’s description of what a branch actually copied lines up with that fourth family:

“Passport with visa; I had a recent (less than 30 days) declaration/affidavit of address from the Embassy […]; blue tabian baan housebook; marriage certificate; I also have the yellow tabian baan housebook (for non-Thais) and the pink non-Thai ID card; drivers licence (as second form of photo ID). Think she took copies of everything.”One account holder on r/Thailand, April 2025, listing what a branch copied

That published list is a floor. Kasikornbank’s own notes reserve the right to ask for more, and no bank of the four presents what it publishes as the whole of it.

Kasikornbank names the Destination Thailand Visa among the visas it does not open accounts on

This is the part that catches people who arrived on a visa designed for exactly this kind of life. In the notes under its document list, Kasikornbank states that accounts are not allowed to be opened for holders of a tourist visa, or other types of visa intended for travel in Thailand, and it names visa on arrival, visa exemption and the Destination Thailand Visa among them.

Read the whole list rather than the last item. The Destination Thailand Visa is not being singled out by Kasikornbank: it is grouped with the visas the bank treats as travel visas, which is a category decision rather than a verdict on one scheme. Siam Commercial Bank, Krungsri and Bangkok Bank name no such exclusion in what they publish, and that silence is not permission: three of the four simply do not tell you either way.

Applicants describe an overlapping perimeter without citing the page. In April 2025, correcting somebody who believed there had been a blanket ban:

“First off there was no hard freeze on foreigners. Those with appropriate visas (retire or work, elite, LTR, SMART) and applicable extra paperwork (eg: work permit) could and still can easily open accounts. What there is (and still ongoing) is tighting up on those on exemptions, tourist, ED (language school, not proper school) and yes DTV. And yes its still ongoing […] But it is still possible to open bank accounts on all these, just, without serious luck, going to take going to lot of branches until find one that finally says yes”An account holder on r/Thailand, April 2025, on which visa types they saw tightening. Kasikornbank is the only one of the four pages we read that names that visa

That is one person, and a second wrote something similar two months later, attaching a reason: that applicants on tourist-type visas cannot open accounts because of money-laundering concerns and rules that make banks answerable for fraudulent activity. Neither of them measures anything, and neither speaks for Kasikornbank. What they do is name the same visa from the counter side, inside lists of their own that do not match the bank’s: the first of them adds ED language-school visas, and puts retirement, work, elite, LTR and SMART on the permitted side, none of which Kasikornbank names.

There is a loop underneath this that the visa side of the problem creates, and three people in these threads hit it independently. A retirement extension asks for money in a Thai bank account, and the account asks for the status the extension will grant. One put it as a question: What I don’t understand is for a non-O, I need money in a Thai bank account to be eligible, but I can’t open the account without the non-O? Which visa Thailand grants and on what evidence is a separate question, and our guide to the gaps between the official checklist and what embassies actually want covers that side of it.

What applicants describe that no page publishes

The four pages tell you about four banks. They do not tell you about branches, and this is where the reports diverge most sharply. Two accounts from the same thread in May 2026, weeks apart:

One applicant with eleven years in Thailand, a long-term visa and a valid work permit was turned down at three banks in Phuket, and was told policies had recently changed. Another, in the same discussion, wrote: Just opened my 7th Thai bank account (Krungthai) last month. Passport, work permit, visa. Completed in 15 minutes.

Both of those are true accounts and neither is a measurement, so the honest thing to do with them is to put them next to each other and leave them there. What is more useful is the reading one applicant offered of why the two are compatible:

“It doesn’t seem like there have been any major legal directives about this. It’s mostly the bank executives setting their own policies that branch managers have some discretion to interpret. That’s why it’s easier to open at some branches rather than others.”An account holder on r/Thailand, April 2025

That is somebody’s explanation and not a source. It is worth quoting because it predicts exactly what we found by reading the pages: four banks publishing four different amounts, with no common template behind them. It also predicts the smaller divergences applicants report, such as one bank asking for a Thai tax number from a non-immigrant visa holder while another opened the account without one.

The Bank of Thailand notice is written to the banks, and it does not define who counts as a non-resident

What the notice says: the Bank of Thailand’s notice on non-resident baht accounts sets out that authorised institutions are allowed to open such accounts for four purposes only: accounts for investment in securities and financial instruments issued in Thailand, special accounts for trade and investment with neighbouring countries, accounts for general purposes, and special accounts for baht loans or baht-denominated securities.

What it does not settle: the notice is addressed to the institutions rather than to the applicant, and it does not define who counts as a non-resident. That definition sits in a Ministry of Finance notification which we tried to reach on 15 August 2026 and did not obtain.

So the primary source exists, it is quotable, and it answers a different question from the one you came with. It tells you what an institution is permitted to open, and it does not tell you what a person has to bring, which is why the four bank pages above are doing the work in this article and the notice is not.

The notice contemplates deposits tied to money remitted from abroad, to a loan from the bank, or to defined investment purposes, each with a supporting document per transaction. And because we could not obtain the definition of a non-resident, we cannot tell you that Thai law permits a non-resident individual to open a personal account, and we cannot tell you that it does not. The Bank of Thailand’s own public summary says non-residents may open baht accounts with authorised banks, without defining the subject. Anyone who tells you the law settles this in either direction is reading further than the text goes.

What to have ready, and the order to do it in

✓
Check the visa question before anything else. On its page read 15 August 2026, Kasikornbank publishes that it does not open accounts on tourist visas, visa on arrival, visa exemption or the Destination Thailand Visa.
