N26 Closed My Account and My Money Is Stuck: How to Get It Back
Your N26 account is closed, your money is stuck inside it, and the app either shows nothing or no longer lets you in. Support replies with a template or not at all, and nobody tells you when the balance comes back, or where.
The balance is still yours and N26 owes it back to you. To get it moving, give N26 a SEPA IBAN, answer every document request in full, and send a written complaint, which starts a legal response deadline. The one thing these steps cannot unlock is money held for an investigation, covered below.
Under German law, money held on a bank account is treated as a loan to the bank: section 700 of the Civil Code (BGB) applies the loan rules to deposited money, and section 488 obliges the borrower to repay the loan when it falls due. Deposit protection is a separate question: N26’s terms say deposits would be repaid up to EUR 100,000 if the bank became insolvent, which does not apply to a closure. This guide follows N26’s published EU terms and the German law behind them, read on 2 October 2026, and covers personal accounts with N26 Bank SE in the EU.
Why N26 closes accounts and keeps the balance for a while
N26 Bank SE is a German bank, and its EU terms give it two very different ways to end your account. Which one you received decides how much time you have.
The first is an ordinary termination. Clause 19 of N26’s General Business Conditions says the bank may terminate “upon observing a reasonable period of notice”, and that “the minimum termination notice for a payment services framework contract (e.g. current account or card contract) […] shall be two months.” German law sets the same floor: section 675h BGB says the notice period for a payment account “darf zwei Monate nicht unterschreiten” (may not be shorter than two months). The clause does not require N26 to give a reason, which matches one second-hand account:
“they didn’t do anything wrong and the bank refused to give any reason at all for the termination.” Hacker News comment about friends who were N26 customers, November 2019
The second is a termination without notice. The same clause allows it “if there is reasonable cause which makes it unacceptable to the Bank to continue the business relations”. N26 must then “allow the Customer a reasonable period of time for settlement”, “unless it is necessary to attend immediately thereto”, so the account can stop working right away.
There is also a legal trigger above the contract. Section 10(9) of the German Anti-Money Laundering Act (GwG) says that if a bank cannot complete its basic customer checks (identity, beneficial owner, purpose of the account), the relationship “darf […] nicht fortgesetzt werden und darf keine Transaktion durchgeführt werden”: it may not continue, and no transaction may be carried out. That is why an unanswered document request can stop your money from moving, not just the account.
For the wider pattern, here is why neobanks freeze accounts after regulator fines, N26 included.
Read your N26 closure letter first: notice or no notice
Find the closure message N26 sent (email, in-app inbox or letter) and look at the wording.
- Does it speak of notice and a closure date at least two months away? That points to an ordinary termination. The contract is still running until that date, so if the app still lets you in, the cheapest fix is to move your money out now.
- Does it say “without notice” or “with immediate effect”? That is a termination without notice. If it still leaves you a window and the app opens, move your money out now; once the account is blocked, the money leaves only through N26’s payout process.
One N26 customer living abroad, asked to repeat an ID check they could not complete with only a passport, used the window they had:
“I withdraw all my money from the account two days before they lock it.” N26 customer living abroad, Hacker News, November 2018
N26 account closed, money stuck: how to get it out, step by step
One caveat: N26’s help page on closing an account is written for customers who close it themselves, and we found no N26 page for closures the bank starts. Treat the payout and repayment rules below as N26’s default, not a promise for every case.
- ✓
Give N26 a SEPA IBAN for the payout. N26’s closure help page says that “to pay out any leftover funds, we need an alternative bank account within the SEPA zone”.
- ✓
Answer every document request completely, in one reply. Under GwG section 10(9), unfinished basic checks can be a legal reason money cannot move. Send what is asked, labelled, as clear PDFs.
- ✓
Download what you still can. If the app still opens, export statements and screenshot the balance and the closure message today.
- ✓
Put the request in writing to the complaints address. N26’s price list names
beschwerden@n26.comas its “contact address for complaints”. - ✓
Settle any negative balance quickly. The same help page says a negative balance should be repaid “within 7 days of your account closure date”, or the debt may go to a collection agency.
Do not skip the IBAN. On the same page N26 says that if no SEPA IBAN was given with the closure request, you should “contact support within 3 days. If we don’t hear from you, we’ll move your funds to a holding account. You can still request them back later, but this will require extra identity checks to comply with EU regulations.” Sending the IBAN early avoids that extra step. If you have left Europe and no longer hold an account in the SEPA zone, open one before you ask for the payout: we compared the options by reliability rather than by fees in the neobanks that hold up when you change countries.
When you write, include your full name, date of birth, N26 IBAN, the balance, the closure date, the IBAN to be paid and a list of attachments. If you are unsure whether to appeal the closure or complain about the money, here is the difference between an appeal and a formal complaint: for a stuck balance, the complaint is the step that creates a deadline.
How long N26 can hold your money after closing the account
Neither N26’s EU terms nor the German law we read sets a fixed number of days for the payout itself. What the law does fix is how long N26 has to answer a written complaint about your payment account.
Section 62 of the German Payment Services Supervision Act (ZAG) says a payment service provider must answer “spätestens innerhalb von 15 Arbeitstagen nach Eingang der Beschwerde” (at the latest within 15 working days of receiving the complaint), and must address every question raised. If it cannot, for reasons outside its control, it must send a holding reply with the reason and a date, and the final answer may come “in keinem Fall später als 35 Arbeitstage” (in no case later than 35 working days). It covers complaints under sections 675c to 676c BGB, termination included, and applies to German banks such as N26 Bank SE.
The deadline you can count on runs from your written complaint: 15 working days, or 35 at most with a reasoned holding reply. Write down the date you sent it. If day 15 passes with nothing, or day 35 passes without a final answer, you have a documented reason to escalate.
There is a part no complaint will unlock. Section 47 of the GwG forbids a bank from telling a customer about a suspicious activity report, or about an investigation that follows from one. If your account is part of such a case, N26 support may not be allowed to explain why your money is held, however politely you ask.
What happens to payments sent to your closed N26 account
Once the IBAN is closed, incoming SEPA transfers cannot land on it. The sender’s bank gets the payment back with the reason code AC04, which German bank HypoVereinsbank’s payment documentation lists as “Account closed”, with the instruction “Contact customer about new account”. The money goes back to whoever sent it, not to you.
Give your employer, clients and any platform that pays you a new IBAN now, and ask anyone whose payment bounced to resend it there. Move rent, utilities and subscriptions off the old N26 IBAN too.
If the closure also left you without a working account, the strongest Revolut alternatives on reliability is where to start rebuilding, ideally across more than one provider. Which of them would actually open an account for you is a separate question: our comparator checks the acceptance rules of 120 neobanks and EMIs against your nationality and residence to show which providers would accept you.
When N26 stops replying: the Bundesbank arbitration board
If N26 misses the deadline or says no, the next step is not the regulator. BaFin’s complaints page is direct about it: “Bafin cannot help individual consumers enforce their rights in specific cases.” It may forward your complaint to the bank and ask it to respond, but it “is not permitted to rule on individual disputes”.
Clause 21 of N26’s General Business Conditions says that “N26 Bank SE is obliged to take part in a dispute settlement procedure before a consumer dispute arbitration board”, and names the board at the Deutsche Bundesbank for payment services disputes (it also lists a separate board at BaFin for other banking disputes). The Bundesbank arbitration board examines your case on the documents and issues a written proposal: it does not impose a ruling. What its procedure page says:
- It is free for consumers. “Das Verfahren ist für Verbraucherinnen und Verbraucher kostenfrei”, though your own costs (lawyer, postage, phone) are not refunded.
- It runs in German. “Die Verfahrenssprache ist Deutsch.” You can be represented, so a German-speaking friend or adviser can help.
- It is slow. The bank gets one month to respond, the arbitrator issues a proposal within 90 days of having the full file, and the board says to expect about six months for a full procedure. On 2 October 2026 its main page also warned of delays because of an unusually high number of complaints.
- It binds only if both sides accept. The proposal becomes binding only if both parties accept it within six weeks; if not, you can still go to court.
Apply through the board’s online form at bundesbank.de/schlichtungsantrag, and attach N26’s closure message, your complaint, N26’s reply or proof that none came, and your statements. In a 2022 Hacker News thread about N26 closures, one commenter described what a formal step did for a friend at an online bank they did not name:
“When the service did not release the funds, he went to the court and the bank immediately released the money without explanation.” Hacker News commenter about a friend’s online bank (bank not named), April 2022
It is one story about an unnamed bank, not a prediction, but it shows why it pays to build the paper trail early.
Send N26 a SEPA IBAN and every document it asks for, then complain in writing and note the date. If N26 misses the legal deadline or says no, go to the Bundesbank arbitration board: BaFin does not rule on individual disputes.
FAQ
How long does N26 take to pay out my balance after closing my account?+–
No fixed payout period appears in N26’s EU terms or in the German law we read. The fixed clock is for N26’s answer to a written complaint about your payment account: 15 working days, or 35 at most with a reasoned holding reply, under section 62 of the German Payment Services Supervision Act.
Can N26 close my account without giving a reason?+–
For an ordinary termination, N26’s terms require notice of at least two months, and the termination clause does not require the bank to state a reason. If a closure is linked to a suspicious activity report, section 47 of the German Anti-Money Laundering Act forbids the bank from telling you about that report.
Where does N26 send the money if I do not give an IBAN?+–
To a holding account, according to N26’s help page for customers who close their own account, with extra identity checks to get the money back later. Sending an IBAN early avoids that step.
Is my money safe while my N26 account is closed?+–
The balance remains a claim against N26 Bank SE, a licensed German bank. N26’s terms say deposits are covered by the Entschädigungseinrichtung deutscher Banken and, if the bank became insolvent, would be repaid up to EUR 100,000. That protection is about insolvency and does not speed up a payout. For how this works in a freeze, here is why deposit protection does not help with a freeze (UK FSCS example).
Should I complain to BaFin about my stuck N26 balance?+–
You can, and BaFin may forward your complaint to N26, but BaFin says it cannot help individual consumers enforce their rights or rule on individual disputes. For a dispute with N26 about your payment account, the Bundesbank arbitration board examines the case and issues a proposal, free for consumers and in German.
